THE ORIGIN
Cardiff is named for Cardiff Fork, the drainage between Big and Little Cottonwood in the central Wasatch — granite slabs, cirques, and steep couloirs. That's our home, and it's where the brand's instincts come from. But the way our boards ride in something deep — the float, the quiet underfoot — a lot of that came from Hokkaido. We've spent ten years building boards shaped by both places. This trip goes back to one of them. You'll ride with Sam Bawden, Cardiff's founder, through the regions that taught the brand how to think about snow, on shapes we haven't put on the market yet. What you feel out there, and what you tell us about it, goes straight back into the next boards we make. That's not a line for the website. It's how we've always done it.
THE RIDING
Five or six days on snow, and we don't sit still. We base out of Furano and Niseko — two of the most dependable powder regions anywhere — and each morning we look at what fell overnight and go find the best of it. Some days that's trees, some days it's the resort, some mornings it's an hour in the van to be first into something fresh. Every rider is on Cardiff boards and skis and some that aren't available to the public yet. We'll also have unique Cardiff shapes built only for Japan on hand to ride. You're not demoing gear. You're helping build the line, with the person who designs it riding next to you. Along the way we'll link up with Cardiff riders from Japan — locals who know the snow and ride it the way it's meant to be ridden.
BEYOND THE SNOW
Hokkaido is as good off the hill as it is on it. We'll spend time in Sapporo during the Snow Festival — whole city blocks turned into towering snow and ice sculptures, lit up at night. It's one of the great winter events in the world and worth the trip on its own. The rest is food and quiet. Ramen built for a Hokkaido winter, long dinners, small villages, and an onsen at the end of a deep day. Most people come home talking about these parts as much as the riding.
GETTING THERE
We leave airfare to you. Most guests would rather put their own miles and credits toward getting to Japan, and this way you fly the way you want. If you'd rather not sort it out yourself, our partner travel agency can handle it for you. We pick every guest up at New Chitose Airport, gear and all, on the dates below. From there, everything on the island is handled. A lot of guests build in an extra day or two — Tokyo on the front or back end, or somewhere else they've always wanted to see. We're happy to help you plan around it.
JOIN US!
Bottom line, a week riding the zones that shaped Cardiff, with Sam Bawden and Cardiff riders from Japan, on boards nobody else has been on yet — and a crew there to capture all of it. Seats are limited. This winter we hope to see you there!
